EXCITING is a 24 month Horizon 2020 Coordination and Support Action launched in November 2016.

The EU-China Study on IoT and 5G (EXCITING) aims to support the creation of favourable conditions for cooperation between the European and Chinese research and innovation ecosystems, mainly related to the Future Internet and the key strategic domains of Internet of Things (IoT) and 5G. EXCITING is implemented by eight EU and six Chinese partners.

Word from the Coordinator

Dear Stakeholders of the EU-China 5G and IoT Collaboration,
Thank you for being part of the EXCITING (EU-China Study on IoT and 5G) project community! EXCITING, a project jointly funded by the European Commission’s H2020 programme, the Chinese government (Ministry of Science and Technology) and the Swiss authority (the State Secretariat for Education, Research and Innovation), has the sole aim to understand and support better cooperation between Europe and China in the field of Future Internet, especially the fields of IoT and 5G. Since its start in November 2016, we as a team of fourteen members (eight from Europe, six from China), have strived to work on not only the planned project activities, but also on identifying and reaching out to relevant platforms and experts which help us to get our voice heard and job done better. Within the first 8-month of the project, we’ve participated in over 10 events in Europe and China that are relevant to the topic of development of IoT and 5G across the world. Our web portal has attracted 6.000 visitors internationally, and our Twitter has over 80 followers. In this edition, we highlight the following topics: events that EXCITING has organised and participated in, including the first project-organised conference in China that attracted over 200 participants; a survey launched to better understand players and their roles in the Future Internet ecosystem in both China and Europe; an interactive tool Panorama that helps stakeholders like you to identify new opportunities. We also include interesting reports relevant to the project themes for your further exploration of the topic.
We hope you enjoy reading about them!
Have a great summer!

Participate in the EXCITING Future Internet Questionnaire!

Partners from various work packages have prepared a questionnaire with the objective of understanding the current status of the Future Internet ecosystem in China and to understand the way forward for EU-China cooperation. The questionnaire is open to all stakeholders involved in Future Internet sectors, namely 5G and the Internet of Things (IoT). The EXCITING project team would very much welcome your participation in the questionnaire, which takes approximately 20 minutes to complete.
The questionnaire is available in English and Chinese.

Panoramo Tool

EXCITING Panorama Tool is online!

Earlier this year, the EXCITING project team released an online tool, called PANORAMO, which helps stakeholders in identifying new opportunities. It makes available in a single location all open calls, projects, upcoming events, funding agencies, networks and clusters, outcomes from the EXCITING project (reports, webinars...) related to Europe/China collaboration in IoT and 5G. The PANORAMA online tool is already available and will be updated with new content during the project’s lifetime.

EXCITING partnership discussing its first EU-China recommendations

As part of its objective to support EU-China cooperation in the fields of IoT and 5G, the EXCITING consortium has been discussing initial recommendations to facilitate this process. These ideas are still being matured, but a first set of recommendations include:

  1.   To establish a Memorandum of Understnading between the Alliance for the Internet of Things Innovation (AIOTI) in Europe and the Alliance of Industrial Internet (AII) in China.
  2.   To support 5G PPP in facilitating interoperability tests between Europe and China 5G standards.
  3.   To achieve a better alignment of the evaluation process on the European and Chinese sides in joint funding projects.

Additional recommendations and concrete steps will follow in the coming months. However, EXCITING is eager to know your thought and how else EU-China cooperation can be achieved. Do contact us with your feedback!

1st Conference
EXCITING at the European  Conference on Networks and Communications (EuCNC)
EXCITING, represented by MARTEL, was recently present at the European Conference on Networks and Communications (EuCNC) event on June 12th – 15th, 2017. EXCITING is considered a good fit for the theme of this year’s Conference: “5G – European Roadmap, Global Impact”. A number of potential stakeholders showed interest in the project and its link to China. The event was a good opportunity to establish fruitful connections to be exploited in upcoming EXCITING activities.

ERICENA Workshop

EXCITING participated in the ERICENA High Level Workshop in Brussels

Representatives of the EXCITING project participated in the ERICENA (European Research and Innovation Centre of Excellence in China) High Level Workshop which took place in Brussels on June 20th, 2017. The ERICENA workshop was organised by Steinbeis 2i GmbH, Fraunhofer IPK and SPI. Approximately 40 participants attended the workshop that discussed the outcomes of a recent ERICENA study, which aimed to understand the STI Framework in China according to the six PESTLE categories: Political, Economic, Social, Technological, Legal and Environmental. The discussion also supported the definition of potential services ERICENA should focus on for the its future Centre of Excellence in China, which will have regional hubs and will provide tailor-made services to European Research Technology and Innovation (RTI) actors. EXCITING expects to establish fruitful links with ERICENA, which will be a project to support the exploitation of EXCITING results.

How the EXCITING project will strengthen EU-China co-operation in IoT and 5G

In the International Communications Project, Latif Ladid, representing the EXCITING partner University of Luxembourg and President of the IPv6 Forum provides an interesting review of how the EXCITING project will play an important role in strengthening EU-China cooperation in the areas of IoT and 5G. The news piece recognises that Europe and China are leaders of technological advances in areas related to the Future Internet (especially 5G and IoT), and that there is still an opportunity for additional bilateral cooperation. It is on this opportunity that EXCITING aims to intervene, and namely to support the creation of favourable conditions for cooperation between the European and Chinese research and innovation ecosystems in the key strategic domains of IoT and 5G.

Interesting Read: EU-China Joint White Paper on the Internet of Things

One of the main sources of inspiration behind the objectives of EXCITING is the understanding of the current status of 5G and IoT in Europe and China, the acknowledgement that challenges exist for both Europe and China, and that a strong cooperation is a key way forward to address these challenges and contribute to a stronger Future Internet industry. The EU-China Joint White Paper on the Internet of Things, published early 2016, and authored by the European Commission and the China Academy of Information and Communication Technology (CAICT), provides a very interesting read and provides a reference on how EXCITING plans to contribute to progress in this area, namely in the challenges related to business models and new ways of cooperation, interoperability, trust, and the technical and societal environment.

Work ahead for Europe in 5G
The Future of Internet is 5G, but a number of operators and technology associations believe that Europe still has significant work ahead in the field. Six operators and technology associations signed a joint statement that discussed Europe’s "timid approach that will do little to improve Europe's chances of success". They further demanded a new regulatory environment with 5G investment and innovation at its heart.
