Welcome from the Project Coordinator
Cybersecurity capabilities are nowadays essential for achieving individual organisations’ and societies’ goals, even more so in the increasingly globalized and connected world, as Informatisation is widely recognized as an enabling factor for developing economies and society.
ASEAN, and in particular low and middle-income countries in this region, have long been subject to several cybersecurity issues and are exposed to specific risks, ranging from data breaches to intentional intrusions by adversaries. The importance of ASEAN cyber capacity-building, securing a safer common cyberspace, and facilitating exchanges on cyber norms was emphasised by ministers of communication of ASEAN countries at the occasion of the inaugural ASEAN Ministerial Conference on Cybersecurity, which took place in October 2016.
Before this background, the European Commission (EC) has granted funding to the project “YAKSHA - Cybersecurity Awareness and Knowledge Systemic High-level Application” within the framework of its Horizon 2020 Programme. During the lifetime of YAKSHA, the Project Consortium - consisting of both EU and ASEAN partners - will:
  • Assess the Cybersecurity state of the art in the ASEAN area and future developments
  • Develop and validate a distributed, flexible, cybersecurity solution
  • Take the necessary steps to enable the sustainable uptake of scientific, technical and economic results and foster cooperation and partnerships between EU-ASEAN.

The YAKSHA software solution will be validated in real-world pilot projects in both Europe and Southeast Asia regions, and we are looking forward to the support of a number of YAKSHA Ambassadors, i.e. YAKSHA representatives who are active in the field of cybersecurity, software and/or more largely internet security and defence, in deploying the project outcomes via a large ASEAN network.
The entire consortium is strongly motivated, and so I am looking forward to driving the joint efforts over the upcoming months with the aim to reach our goals and thus contribute to a safer cyber space in ASEAN and enhanced cooperation and partnership between EU and ASEAN.

Discover YAKSHA, a new Horizon 2020 Project
The project «YAKSHA - Cybersecurity Awareness and Knowledge Systemic High-level Application», funded under the European Union´s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme, will reinforce European Union (EU) and Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN) cooperation and build partnerships in the Cybersecurity domain by developing a solution tailored to specific users and national needs, leveraging EU Know-How and expertise and local knowledge. More precisely, YAKSHA will develop innovative methods for malware detection, collection and analysis, as well as design a specialised ontology to be used for long-term storage and analysis of the information, and deploy standard information formats and interfaces to facilitate interoperability.
