On 11 November 2014 AerSUS had its last project meeting in Porto, Portugal.

The last project meeting focused especially on the work performed on the development of aerogel insulation systems. The concept that was identified for the encapsulation of aerogels was discussed, as well as the process and results of the launch environment simulation (depressurisation test, vibration test, repeated depressurisation test) performed to the encapsulated aerogel samples. The upcoming work on aerogel thermal insulation prototype manufacturing and performance evaluation was agreed. The last steps of the project were also discussed.

AerSUS was represented by two project partners (University of Coimbra – UC and Deutschen Zentrums für Luft- und Raumfahrt – DLR) at the International Seminar on Aerogels 2014, held between October 6 and 7, 2014 in Hamburg, Germany. This international event brings together scientists, engineers and students to exchange information related to the synthesis, characterisation and the various applications of Aerogels. UC presented their work in the project through an oral presentation with the title: Effect of additives on the Properties of Silica Based Aerogels Synthesized from Methyltrimethoxysilane (MTMS) (the presentation will be available here).  DLR presented their aerogel synthesis work through a poster with the title: Improved insulation ability of cellulosic aerogels by embedding hydrophilic silica aerogel granulate (the poster will be available here).

AerSUS was represented at the International Astronautical Congress (IAC) that took place in Toronto, Canada from September 29 to October 3, 2014.

The IAC is an important annual interdisciplinary event which brings together actors from the space industry, space agencies, policy makers, researchers and others from across the globe. The IAC 2014 congress was attended by 3200 participants from 64 countries. AerSUS was present at the fair with their own stand, enabling greater networking amongst other exhibitors and visitors. The fair was also an opportunity to showcase aerogel semi-industrial scale samples developed by the different project partners. AerSUS was also presented through an oral presentation with the title: The 3 Omega Transient Line Method for Thermal Characterization of Superinsulator Materials Developed for Spacecraft Thermal Control. The presentation discussed the work of Active Space Technologies GmbH in the project. This presentation can be accessed here.

AerSUS was represented in the International Astronautical Congress (IAC) that took place in Beijing, China on 23 – 27 October 2013 The IAC is an important annual interdisciplinary event worldwide gathering actors from the space industry, space agencies, policy makers, researchers and others. The IAC 2013 congress was attended by over 3000 participants from more than 70 countries. AerSUS was represented by Active Space Technologies S.A. to companies in the Aerospace sectors, electronics sectors and to general public and students.

AerSUS was presented at the Industry Space Days (www.industryspacedays.com) organized by the European Space Agency (ESA) on 3 – 4 June 2014 at ESTEC in Noordwijk, the Netherlands. Industry Space Days bring together the main European players in the space sector with the objective to increase the participation of small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) in space activities and to foster collaboration between the various actors of the space sector. The event had approximately 1000 participants. AerSUS was presented at the exhibition part of the event.


2 June 2014

AerSUS was presented at the 14th European Meeting on Supercritical Fluids on the 18 – 21 May 2014 in Marseille (http://emsf2014.com/). The meeting aimed to provide a complete and critical up-date on all the current technologies using Supercritical Fluids, their different applications as well as the latest innovations being developed. SEPAREX presented the AerSUS project as a scale-up 2 example for the manufacturing of nanomaterial by using supercritical CO2 and the advantages of using such technology in aerospace application. ARMINES´ work in AerSUS concerning material development using supercritical drying was presented in the poster session as well. The event had over 300 participants, belonging to the supercritical fluid community including academic researchers and industrial practitioners.


2 May 2014

ARMINES´ work in AerSUS was presented at the Journées Industrielles Nanomatériaux 2014 (http://cmm.mines-paristech.fr/Nanomines/JI.htm) organized on April 10 - 11, 2014 at MINES ParisTech in Paris, France. The event brought together approximately 70 participants, belonging to academia and industry, to discuss economic and societal challenges and new developments in nanotechnologies such as energy proficiency and eco materials. In this event, AerSUS was presented in the poster session. The presented poster can be downloaded here.


20 March 2014

AerSUS was disseminated at the 1st Seminar on Organically Modified Silica Aerogels (Aero-ORMOSIL 2014) organized in the framework of the project GelSpace – Silica Based Aerogels for Insulation of Spatial Devices. The seminar took place on 19 March 2014 at the University of Coimbra (UC) in Portugal and had 66 participants, belonging to academia and industry. In this event,  the results of the GelSpace project were discussed, as well as other nanotechnology related works going on in the Department of Chemical Engineering of UC. AerSUS was presented in the poster session, by a poster communication with results obtained by UC and the overall objetives of AerSUS.

On 22 January 2014 AerSUS had its fourth project meeting in Didcot, UK.

At the fourth project meeting partner organizations had the opportunity to discuss the work progress made since the previous meeting. The focus of the meeting was on the the development of aerogel samples at semi-industrial scale. Partners in charge presented the details of the aerogel synthesis and introduced the results of characterization. Details were also presented on the space compatibility preliminary assessment of the aerogel samples and the aerogels thermal analysis for target applications. The steps until the next project meeting were defined including the aerogel thermal insulation prototype manufacturing and performance evaluation.


09 December 2013

The AerSUS stakeholder event took place in Space Expo in Noordwijk, the Netherlands, on December 4th, 2013. The workshop had participants from a range of organisations active in the Space sector, such as Astrium GmbH, Dutch Space, Jena-Optronik GmbH, Kayser-Threde GmbH, HPS GmbH, NLR, DLR and OHB-System AG. Following the presentation of AerSUS and its interim results, the attendees provided valuable feedback on their expectations regarding aerogels, as thermal insulation materials in Space and suggestions for improvements. AerSUS stakeholder event is to take place in Noordwijk, the Netherlands, on December 4th, 2013, following the Annual European Space Thermal Analysis Workshop. AerSUS was represented in the XVII International Sol-Gel Conference that took place in Madrid, Spain on 25 – 30 August 2013

The Sol-Gel Conference is a recognized biannual meeting gathering actors from the Sol-Gel materials research area worldwide. AerSUS was presented at the event by the University of Coimbra (Department of Chemical Engineering) through a poster presentation introducing their work in the project. The poster had the title of “Influence of sol-gel conditions on the key properties of silica-based aerogels for thermal insulation in Space”, and it can be read here.

AerSUS at the 43rd International Conference on Environmental Systems

AerSUS was disseminated by Thales Alenia Space Italia at the 43rd International Conference on Environmental Systems taking place on 14 – 18 July 2013 in Vail, Colorado (U.S.). The annual conference organized by the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) deals with humans living and working in hostile environments with applications inside or outside of terrestrial or outer space habitats or vehicles. On 9 April 2013 AerSUS had its third project meeting in Nancy, France

At this third project event partner organizations had the opportunity to discuss the work progress made since the previous meeting. This was focused especially on the development of aerogels. Three different kinds of aerogels were used for the synthesis work, which included fibres reinforced aerogel-aerogel composites, organically modified silica-based aerogels and silica / organic hybrid aerogels. Partners in charge presented the details of the aerogel synthesis they had implemented and showed the best results obtained so far in terms of thermal conductivity, density and compression strength of the materials. Additionally, the design of semi-industrial scale equipment adapted to the AerSUS aerogels was discussed. Based on the initial design, a fully automated equipment for large scale aerogels was constructed, which was demonstrated to the partnership.

AerSUS in the Seminar on AEROGELS Properties-Manufacture-Applications

AerSUS was presented in the Seminar on AEROGELS Properties-Manufacture- in Nancy, France on 6 and 7 December 2012.

On 6 and 7 December 2012 Aersus was presented through a poster in the Seminar on AEROGELS Properties-Manufacture- in Nancy, France organized by the International Society for the Advancement of Supercritical Fluids (I.S.A.S.F.). The seminar hosted around 100 participants involved in aerogels research and production. This event was chaired by Dr. Michel PERRUT from SEPAREX (French partner in the AerSUS project), and Prof. Irina SMIRNOVA from Hamburg University of Technology - TUHH, Germany.

AerSUS was represented at the ILA Berlin Air Show 2012 - International Aerospace Exhibition and Conferences

AerSUS was represented by Deutschen Zentrums für Luft- und Raumfahrt (DLR) at the ILA Berlin Air Show 2012 that took place on 11 – 16 September, 2012. ILA is a major trade exhibition for the aerospace and defense industries and public air show organized on a bi-annual basis. ILA 2012 was attended by 230.000 visitors.

On 12-13 June 2012 AerSUS had its second project meeting in Berlin, Germany

At this second project event partner organizations had the opportunity to discuss the work progress made since the kick-off meeting. This was focused especially on the benchmarking activities conducted previously. This included a study of the state of the art of thermal insulation materials used for space applications. Suitable space applications for AerSUS aerogels were also discussed by partners. Another main topic of the meeting was the discussion of the outcomes of the technical specifications defined for the later aerogel development for space applications. In addition to the technical specifications for the aerogels' synthesis methods, and for the development and operation of the manufacturing technology, the basic characteristics of a thermal insulation for various environments encountered in space applications were identified.

In general, partners considered that the Space applications for which AerSUS materials are previewed to excel as thermal insulation materials, include particularly the following items (further exploitation possibilities will be assessed at the end of the project based on the final materials´ characteristics): satellites applications (including small satellites), planetary robotic explorations and scientific payload and experiments.

On 7 - 8 February AerSUS had its first project meeting in Coimbra, Portugal.

AerSUS had its first project meeting in Coimbra, Portugal. At this first project event partner organizations had the opportunity to meet each other and discuss the project in detail, including next activities. These include especially a benchmarking of aerogels applications, a detailed analysis of the aerogel synthesis methods state of art, as well as the definition of the technical specifications for the aerogels' synthesis methods, for the development and operation of the manufacturing technology, and of a set of requirements of aerogel insulation for use on space applications.
